Why Thread Gage Calibration is important to measure equipment easily?
An external or internal threaded part is checked by a thread gage device to examine the threaded part’s acceptance. There are various types of thread gages such as API to spec Q1, API 5B plug and API 7–2 plug which are used to observe the strength, durability, and tolerance etc. to not compromising with the quality. There is a specific procedure of thread gage calibration that you should know properly. Here the procedure is mentioned below in brief. Have a look on it.
- At first select the master set plug to continue for thread gage calibration. Then choose the class size and pitch diameters as per ring gages. The plug must be clean with light oil to avoid nicked and tolerance.
- Clean those ring gages and remove the wax with the help of knife.
- Move the locking screw of ring gage according to clockwise until it gets loosen.
- Move the adjusting screw according to clockwise which helps to open the ring to a large diameter.
- Therefore, on the setting plug you have to rotate the ring until a slight drag happens between two gages. Follow this process twice or more a time.
- To ensure about your ring gage properly seated or not, you have to look on the drag. If the drag does not get changed then it is absolutely fine.
- Now separate the set plug from ring. Then move the ring on the set plug 1 or 2 threads. .
- Now it is ready to measure the diameter of ring gage. The adjusting and locking screws have to be sealed with wax.
These are the procedures of thread gage calibration. American Petroleum Institute (API) thread gage manufactures various types of plugs and ring gages and one of the types of plugs is API 5B plug. Some of the specifications of API 5B plug are it has 8 round ring gage and casing plug where the casings are short thread casing and long thread casing. It has also ring gages and line pipe plug as well as 8 and 10 round ring gages and round tubing plug. Those round tubing plugs are of external upset tubing and non-upset tubing.
